Time to get a blog.

by James Hendler

A few weeks ago, I was sitting in a colleague’s office while he was creating his first ever blog entry. Imagine my surprise when the news of that blog went international, and became a major IT story in many newspapers. “Dang!,” I thought, “I gotta get me one of those.” So here it is, and while I don’t expect it to make anywhere near the splash that one did (the understatement of the year), at least I can’t be accused of not trying to keep up with the MIT types.

I do, however, have a good excuse for this first log entry. Among the various things I do in my research life, I am the editor in chief of IEEE Intelligent Systems and I am pleased to announce that for an upcoming special issue we have held a competition for the top ten up-and-coming AI researchers (people who have received their PhDs in the past few years). Here is the official announcement.

I’m particularly proud to announce that MINDSWAP’s own Jennifer Golbeck was chosen as one of the recipients. Way to go Jen!!

I’ve been looking at some of the stuff on your site and it looks quite interesting. The semantic web is an idea which has been around for quite a few years now, but seems to have gained very little popularity. To me there do seem to be very clear advantages in terms of having programs read and derive knowledge from web pages (or even images) in an automatic way. The sort of markup you’ve done on some of the photos, if repeated on a large scale, could be used to help train machine vision systems, and would enable far better image searching on things like google.
