Semgrail 2007

by James Hendler

I don’t have time for a full trip report, but thought it worth doing a fast “impressions” blog on the “Semgrail 2007″ meeting hosted by Microsoft, June 21 and 22 in Redmond, WA.  This meeting brought together a number of researchers working on the Semantic Web, on issues of Web privacy, and on other somewhat related technologies.  The website for the meeting includes a list of participants and many of the relevant position papers. On the areas most related to my blogosphere interests, discussion topics included the progress of Semantic Web and related technologies, issues on continuing and expanding the growth of these techniques, and issues on scaling.  A cute slogan that emerged was that it was time to stop arguing about chickens and eggs and to start working on creating the poultry farm. Second day breakouts included a session on the research agenda behind both semantic and privacy issues, which led to discussion on the web science agenda and how that related to both areas and beyond.  Discussion also explored how Microsoft could help encourage research in these areas.

All in all, it was an extremely positive event, and it is clear there is growing interest in what MS referred to as “Web intelligence.”
