Airport and Time Warners Road Runner
(apologies to those picking this up on the Semantic Web list, it’s not related)
I searched for information that would be of help when connecting an airport wireless router for a modern home network (i.e. multiple laptops, wifi aware devices, airport express music, etc.) to Time Warner’s Road Runner cable, but was not successful in finding anything that was very helpful, so I thought I would write one for those Googling in the future…
When I first got RoadRunner we hooked up our Airport directly to the modem and it was a mess. Basically, when you restart the modem (which requires pushing a little button in the back, and is not, as in their documentation, done by simply unplugging the modem) it reads the MAC addresses of the systems on the network and assigns IP addresses to those that are up and DHCPing (exact details are not revealed anywhere on their site, and the people who answer the phones say “we don’t do airport” = they will confirm specific MAC addresses, which is how I figured out what was going on). The airport, configured for DHCP, was unable to distribute the IP addresses internally for some reason - so each device got a separate address (not reliably) on reboot, and they all timed out seemingly at random. So if a laptop went out of the house, when it came back in it was often off the network - meaning a reboot was needed. But of course, on that reboot other systems that were out of the house or were asleep didn’t get their addresses, so we were rebooting all over the place. Also, with 3-4 laptops, a desktop iMac, an iphone, an airport express and some other wifi gadgets on occasion, we could never get them all on at once. Best we can tell, there seemed to be a limit (unpublished of course) of five machines (and one or two random sites I found also said 5 appeared to be a limit).
When I called them to find out what was going on, I was told I could pay extra for more machines and they’d come out an help - but they charge a startup price of about $40/device, and when I asked if we could have more than 5 and also things that came and went (such as guests with their machines) they said “I think so, you’ll need to pay for a technician’s visit for them to come and see” (and they would also replace my airport with their wireless router at still more cost). This seemed like a non-starter. I called a couple of local Mac places hoping they might know, and they said they had never set up something with so many addresses for a home user, and that they usually worked with business users who got around this by using a Static address (which would probably have worked, but Time Warner doesn’t provide these to home users, and the business package is really expensive).
After monkeying around for a while, I hit on the working solution - which should have been obvious in the first place (and probably was long ago to the tech savvy folks reading this) - I found an old network HUB (and it must be a HUB, not just a cheap router) and placed it between the modem and the airport. I then set the airport for DHCP and NAT splitting (the default). This way, the HUB separates my internal network (running off the airport router) from the Road Runner side. The airport now serves up proper 10.0.1.x addresses, and the HUB appears to be renewing the DHCP leases in a way that pleases the Road Runner side.
So now all is sweetness and light with our networking, just for fun I opened my 3 old laptops and a second printer (for 10 devices) and all worked fine. We haven’t received a bill yet, so it’s possible I’ll discover some new trick of theirs, but according to their website it is fine for you to run your own wireless network (if you can puzzle out the trick) so I’m hoping…
Note, that I don’t live where this blog comes from anymore and I’m assuming the goons from Time Warner won’t find it profitable to track me down and have me knee-capped over posting this. I hope it will save some others from going through the puzzlement this bizarre networking approach caused.
